SDG 8.4 Proportion of Students Taking Work Placements

Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia

Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) is a postgraduate university whose master’s and doctoral programmes centre on advanced coursework and research. Work placements are built into programmes where professional practice is part of the intended learning outcomes, above all in the Faculty of Education, which places its students in schools, educational organisations and government planning bodies.

In 2025, 25 of UIII’s 444 students, or 5.63 per cent, completed a work placement of more than one month (Table 1). All were students of the Master of Arts in Education, placed between July and September 2025 at four host institutions: Madania School in Bogor, the SEAMEO Regional Centre for Early Childhood Care Education and Parenting (SEAMEO CECCEP) in Bandung, the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) and the MAARIF Institute in Jakarta.

1. Number of Students

UIII had 444 students enrolled in its master’s and doctoral programmes in 2025, according to the University’s student records. All UIII students are postgraduate students.

2. Students with Work Placements of More Than One Month

The Faculty of Education arranged placements for 27 students of the Master of Arts in Education in 2025. Twenty-five of them completed placements of 32 or 33 days, from one calendar date to the same or a later date of the following month, and are counted under indicator 8.4.2. Two students placed at Madania School from 5 August to 2 September 2025 (29 days) did not reach one month and are not counted (Table 3).

The placements allow students to apply what they learn in the programme in a professional setting, observe how organisations work and develop workplace skills: classroom practice at Madania School, early childhood and regional cooperation programmes at SEAMEO CECCEP, national education planning at Bappenas, and research and advocacy at the MAARIF Institute.

SDGs Relevance: Quality Education (4.4), Decent Work and Economic Growth (8.6), Partnerships for the Goals (17.17)

3. Work-Based Learning in a Postgraduate University

Formal work placements are not a requirement of every UIII programme, because most master’s and doctoral students devote their studies to advanced coursework and thesis or dissertation research. Students in other faculties gain applied experience through field research, community engagement and capstone projects with public institutions, such as the Master of Public Policy capstone with UNFPA Indonesia and field engagement with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB); these activities are not counted as work placements in this indicator.

4. Method

1. Students are counted once, by the placement they completed in the calendar year 2025.

2. A placement is counted under indicator 8.4.2 if it lasted more than one month, that is, from a date to at least the same date of the following month (32 days or more including both dates).

3. The number of students is the total enrolment of master’s and doctoral students in 2025 from the University’s student records.

4. Placement records are kept by the Faculty of Education with the names of students, host institutions and periods; individual names are not published.
